If I'm in CA and I dial into a netzero number in NY will a web site I visit be able to tell I'm not really in NY but in CA? I would be dialing in using the *67 prefix, i.e. don't transmit phone #

It depends on how the website is trying to identify you but normally it looks at your IP address and then sees where that is registered so the chances are that yes it will think you are in NY.
BUT
With a lot of commercial dial platforms just because you tell the phone system to not send your caller ID, it will anyway.
With CLI, a flag is set to say you have witheld your number however your number is still transmitted all the way across the network. It is only at the last exchange that the number is hidden.
Due to regulations in place, quite often ISPs (and some call centers) actually still get your phone number or at least part of it.
So in the case of an ISP, they will possibly get the whole number so that they can keep logs of who uses the service where as a call center might just get part of it. EG if your number is 555 1234 they may actually get 555 XXXX so at least they can see the area you are in.

Thanks for the response. So even then you think the website will still think I'm in NY?

Probably BUT if you are thinking of doing something that is not legal, the authorities could go to the ISP in NY and ask for the number used to connect. From there they can trace the connection right back to your house.

Absolutely legal. I need to look "local" to a certain organization.

It doesn't really matter if you use *67. The POP gets your ANI data regardless. The only trouble would be matching up the times, which to say, is quite a bit of work, especially if you're lazy. And netzero isn't exactly the best dialup isp to be using for privacy purposes. People who were circumventing the 10hr. limit got a phone call from netzero, telling them to stop. They monitor their networks closely.
The only way to spoof your ANI is by routing through a PBX, say for example, at a large business or by op diverting. The latter isn't really that effective anymore because of the new operating rules implemented around 2001.

It would make sense that ALL the data is there somewhere. Possibly some locations codes also, that would defeat my purpose.
