Here in Holland there is a little scandal which shows how bad computer security at our law enforcement agency is...
This summer a well known public prosecutor put his old home PC along with some other rubbish at the street side, where a taxidriver found it and took it to his home. The taxidriver found out that it was the PC of this prosecutor and gave/selled it to a popular crime investigation TV program.
This night the program showed the contents of this PC (nothing was secured by a password!): a lot of files about big and well known crimecases (the latest ca. 1,5 years old), various personal dates (loveletters included) and his e-mails with the passwords of the mailaccounts which this prosecutor uses up to this day!
Primarely the prosecutor is now blamed for his lack of security-awereness, but to me it seems that the security policy of his agency is very bad too....
All arround the world security is the least of everyone's concerns...why?....cause of several reasons...
Ignorance about computer issues...cost of money.... time to spend in order to secure your comp....and so on....
Those are issues, which are usually leading simple users and several companies to ignore or neglect security , which sometimes ofcourse , ends up in situations like theone you have described...
