Ok basically we want ti install a piece of software on a spare maching that will regularly ping our clients servers to see if they are still running and to alert us if one goes down. We have looked at Servers Alive (linkage and we like the way it works, what we also want is for it to have some form of fancy screen that shows what its doing rather than the boring frontend that Servers Alive has. This interface is mainly for show for when clients visit but it must still have the functionality to get the job done.

All suggestions appreciated and welcomed.

Not sure what you want but I have been using severs alive for a while and it is quite nice for the price. Yea its not that fancey but what do you expect for a simple (free for 10 or less nodes) program that pings equipment? It also has other capability as well. It can check NT serverices, and can be set up for an "on call" schedule.

You may want to be a little more specific in what you are wanting. Sounds like you are looking for a very fancy GUI?

This may help : http://wnrtool.sourceforge.net/

It does have a GUI but whether it is pretty enough or not I don't know - but it does provide stats and logging as well. Plus it's free.

what about nagios?
Quote:

Nagios has a lot of features, making it a very powerful monitoring tool. Some of the major features are listed below:

* Monitoring of network services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.)
* Monitoring of host resources (processor load, disk and memory usage, running processes, log files, etc.)
* Monitoring of environmental factors such as temperature
* Simple plugin design that allows users to easily develop their own host and service checks
* Ability to define network host hierarchy, allowing detection of and distinction between hosts that are down and those that are unreachable
* Contact notifications when service or host problems occur and get resolved (via email, pager, or other user-defined method)
* Optional escalation of host and service notifications to different contact groups
* Ability to define event handlers to be run during service or host events for proactive problem resolution
* Support for implementing redundant and distributed monitoring servers
* External command interface that allows on-the-fly modifications to be made to the monitoring and notification behavior through the use of event handlers, the web interface, and third-party applications
* Retention of host and service status across program restarts
* Scheduled downtime for supressing host and service notifications during periods of planned outages
* Ability to acknowlege problems via the web interface
* Web interface for viewing current network status, notification and problem history, log file, etc.
* Simple authorization scheme that allows you restrict what users can see and do from the web interface

That last one looked really nice but i guess i forgot to mention that it needs to be windows based as we don't use any linux based systems.
