I have recently installed Red Hat 8.0 on my laptop and wish to now remove it.

It is dual booting with Windows XP and is using GRUB as the boot loader.
How could I go about removing grub so I can then use Partition magic to remove the linux stuff?

I just want to be able to boot right into the XP bootloader.

Thanks.

fdisk /mbr from a dos prompt if the boot loader is on your master boot record, or just remove the /boot partition and set the WinXP partition as the active partition again if you are using a /boot partition.

boot into linux, and type fdisk //dev/hda then delete all of the linux partitions, reboot into a DOS prompt, then type fdisk /mbr (like ST said). but that's how youd would do a complete uninstall of linux.

OK.. B will try that. But just a few questions.

1) Windows XP does not have a Dos prompt as it were (Just command.bat with no fdisk support). How can I get fdisk on the computer?

2) My laptop only has a CD drive/dvd-writer combo. Can I make a copy of a boot disk onto this and then will the cd be a 'boot cdrom'? (The laptop accepts boot cdroms...)

3) There are 2 partitions (Not counting the 3 linux ones) on my hd. One is a recovery partition and the other is Windows it's self. If I do /mbr will it boot onto the main windows bootloader?

Many thanks Smile

fdisk is in all versions of DOS after 6.22 to get to XP DOS prompt, hit f8 RIGHT after the POST.

Nope... I hit F8 and this is all I get :

Safe Mode
Safe Mode With Networking
Safe Mode With Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices

I have tried safe mode with command and this does not recognise fdisk either!

if you have windows xp you can boot from the windows xp cd and select recover existing instalation. pick your install of windows, and enter the admin password etc... type "fixmbr" (without quote obviously) and hit return.

when you reboot it shoud boot stright into windows xp.
its a good idea to use something such as partition magic to remove the partitions, it has a lot less often than linux screwed up my partition tables Razz
