Hi all,
Is it possible to maintain annonymity in a LAN like we do it in the Internet?
This may be a basic question but I am really interested on it.
Plz guide me with your valuable views

Well anon from what? The basic idea behind becoming anon on the net is to hide behind someone else using a proxy.
Its kind of hard hiding behind something like that when a curious person could just WALK over to a computer to see whats really going on.

You may try to use some software that changes your MAC address. This way you will get a new IP for every new MAC address
Make sure to write down your original MAC

What type of lan is it?
Is you're ip binded?
If not just change IP adress to any new that you want.
Is youre lan connected to internet?
If it is, and you can get into it throught the internet.
Simply get some proxy.

Hi all,
My question is similar so i decided to post it here only.
I am currently in college and we have a LAN through which we also connect to the internet. We have the freedom to choose our own IP. Now, many sites, specially downloading sites such as rapidshare, megaupload, megashare etc. are banned. I use UltraSurf to download from these websites and online proxies for viewing purposes. Can my activities of visiting banned websites be traced back to my computer? Also, if I share files across the LAN, can the files be traced back to me with the file names? and lastly, If i continue downloading from these sites, can the people monitoring the servers get to know about it?

I'd like to give you an answer right now, but this can depend on a lot of things, such as the network's layout, network devices used (hubs, switches, routers), security tools used, and so forth.
I'll give you an example. Suppose you are connected to the LAN through a switch or a router. If somewhere between your computer and that switch or router, someone installs a hub and places a machine on another port on the hub in a listening state, they are able to see everything you do on the network.
Usually IP addresses cannot be traced back to a specific machine, unless the IP address was assigned to you by your ISP, in which case they know who had what IP address in a specific time interval. MAC addresses, however, can be traced back to the machine as they are unique to the network cards, but then again, MAC addresses can be spoofed easily.
