Given an IP address, can one easily link this to the physical, geographical address? What sort of privileges are needed to deduce this information?

Well, if the IP is linked to a domain you can do a whois lookup to find out the registrant of the domain. This information does not need to be the real street address where the server is located.

See below for an example for google.com

Code:

C:\WINNT>whois 66.249.93.99

in this case you have the address of the company since it's registered as such.
But if you take an IP address like you are normally using from home (without any domain attached to it) you won't get further then the pool of addresses owned by the ISP.

This is also the reason why cops need to contact the ISP for address details on a given IP address on a given time if they want to know who's behind an IP address doing illegal stuff.

So to make the story short, if its just an IP, you will need to contact the ISP of that IP for the actual address details. Just don't expect them to give it to you as long as your not in the law enforcement business Wink
