Ive been looking around for a good linux server distrobution. The one that looked the best for what I wanted is EnGard linux but I dont feel like spending $500+ on the distro.. also it was RPM based and I have had nothing but bad luck with RPM based distrobutions.
So I was wondering what distrobutions you use for your linux servers and why?
And what do you use to admin thoes servers?

What are you using the server for? Samba? Apache? Is it internet facing or part of an internal LAN? I currently use Redhat but will be moving to debian once my new server arrives, I am making the switch for a number of reasons, I don't like the changes to RedHat 8.0 i find it a struggle if you are just using the console with no gui, I want experience with multiple distros and I love apt-get. It was a toss-up between slackware and debian but i am 80% sure it is going to debian. What do I use to manage it? Erm bash, vi and a lot of patience

For all servers (Samba, FTP, E-mail, PDC etc) I use Debian.
If they are just gonna be firewalling or something I'd use BSD.
Simple
I manage it with Webmin, nano and web interfaces for applications like Communigate Pro.

Well I was going to use this as a DB, web, email, NFS, NIS, named servers.
ST Why do you use Debian? Is it easy to install and setup as a server ?
THanks

Very easy, apt-get makes it all a synch, having 7 CD's is good too and IMHO it installs the best software for each job when you ask it like Exim as an MTA not Sendmail
tasksel takes some getting used to but is good when you've gripped it.
All around clean and tight distro that's why I use it for servers.

I doubt you'll have any problems installing it's fairly straight forward for the computer/*nix literate..
But if you do I wrote this simple guide to get it up and running, obviously you can tailor it slightly for yourself.
