I have used this site in the past for malware problems and have received wonderful advice. I am not sure I am posting in the right section for this kind of problem though.

Here is my problem:

We recently bought a new computer. We play the online game WOW and we were having terrible problems with low fps, so low that the game wasn't playable. The computer came with what we thought was a dedicated graphics card when in fact it was dedicated memory/graphics chip? We were advised that we needed an actual graphics card, so we installed the Nvidia GeForce 9600GT and a new power supple to support the graphics card.

FPS in WOW is a little better but still now what it should be. We have been having issues of short freezes in the game and at the same time Ventrillo freezes. I have been trying to find information on what could cause this in a brand new computer and I am lost.

I have downloaded a DPC latency checker and it is in the red and yellow constantly (between 1800 and 2800 usually). I tried disabling most of what I thought was save to disable in the system devices and nothing improved the DPC Latency. From everything I have read I think this is where my problem lies... but I have no idea what to do with it. Everything else I read is far beyond what I understand about computers.

I am so frustrated at all of these problems in a brand new computer. Here are the specs for the computer. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Diana

Hi tdc11,

I used to play WoW too and your system is overkill for that game! My initial guess would be drivers - do you have the latest drivers for all of your hardware installed? The ones that came shipped on the system might not be the latest.

I went through every device in systems devices yesterday and clicked on update driver but it said I had the most recent drivers installed on all of them.

I don't really understand the dpc latency thing, but it seems to me that if I could fix that problem that the WOW problem would be resolved as well. I read something about using Xperf? for Vista to find out which devices are causing the dpc latency but just looking at the information on how it works overwhelms me. I wouldn't understand what it was saying if it did tell me the problem.

Does your video card support Physx? If so do you have it set for application control or device control?

Yes it has it and right now I have the Physx disabled. I think I tried it on device control but changed it to application control before I disabled it though.

the 9600 GT has been giving people a lot of trouble with games. I've spoken to people that have had trouble with WoW, Guild Wars, Call of Duty, and Mirrors Edge..all running the 9600gt...do you have access to any other card? Are you running the 185.85 drivers??

I don't know what your financial situation is but the 9600GT is historically a bad gaming card. For not much money you can pick up a 9800gtx+ which is an amazing gaming card.

It would be incredibly helpful if you can get a GPU temp before gaming and a GPU temp while gaming
