I use my computer for web surfing, Gmail, and online banking, gaming, and iTunes.
Right now I am running Windows 7 RC, 64 bit, with Kapersky antivirus. I surf the web with Firefox, running in VirtualBox, under a Ubuntu Linux guest. I do not run an antivirus program for the Ubuntu guest. I use Ad Block Plus for Firefox, but not Noscript. I do have a shared folder, so I can save files I download from the web to a location my Windows OS can access it.
I have a couple of questions:
1) Is there any benefit to using antivirus software with my Ubuntu guest?
2) Should I be using a different virtual OS for my "secure" web surfing, like banks and credit cards, or is that paranoid and unnecessary?
3) I don't like Noscript, since it requires a fair bit of effort to flag items as allowed or not allowed. Is it important to use it, or is that also unnecessary for my setup?
Thanks,
Steve

Don't get bogged down with too much secuirty whatever you do buddy. It takes time to get it absolutely right, but definately never double up.
On anti-vrirus prefrably with background running services.
A 1-2 anti-spwywares that don't run in the background.
1 firewall
and also something like ccleaner.
Should be grand.

anti virus is also ok but put more than 1. and put phishing filter. thats all. your computer will be safe. filter will check each and every page before opening. |
More than one anti-virus is not recommended, but more than one anti-spyware is.
Preferably whichever you chose to do, you want as little background running processes as possible to avoid performance getting hammered.

Defintely. You need an Anti-virus if you are using Internet or Floppy Disk or USB. If you are not connecting any other devices to your computer, then you dont need.

As others mentioned, you need a AV, Anti-Spyware.
Well explained here http://www.skapadmin.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=305&title=security-guides-and-tips

I like NoScript. If you are visiting a Website (A), you will come to know how many other websites it has linked to, say for example it has linked to a youtube video. You do not want to play it. Then dont choose allow option. By default, the video will not run. Ultimately, it saves you bandwidth and reduce time of page load.

One antivirus should be enough. I'm using Symantec.

it is depends on what sites you visit. Obviously, some kinds of sites contain so much malaware and viruses that some extra protection is necessary espessialy if you keep important information on your pc (documents, passwords and so on). So, if dont want to lose everything, be careful with internet. Then everything that you have done for protection is enaught. I think.

You should use Anti-Virus software. Because when you are surfing at that time some unwanted threats are possible to come into your PC. So that you need anti virus as well as firewall protection. You can use Kaspersky, Quick Heal Anti-Virus and more. They provide better security rather than other anti virus.

Oh? How do you know? What makes them better? Or is that just a personal opinion.

I think the best protection of your computer is your head. If you visit "right" sites which are trusted by other people, then you are safe from differant kinds of troubles.
I know people who dont use any antiviruses and firewalls and their PCs are ok. They just use internet to read books, play games and write letters. They dont visit any porn sites and so on. So they are rather safe, but not at all, I think.
So once again, the best protection is your actions

Yea, actions are important, but viruses and spywares do their malicious work without letting us know their actions, so an antispyware and a good antivirus (like AVG free or Avast) will be the best solution.

I think for that you should have to use some anti virus software or firewall. This both is most important software for the PC security purpose. But if you want a more protect your PC so you should have to take information in the Google.Youtub or some security related gook.

Unfortunately, plenty of the 'right' sites are affected by malicious content uploaded by users or inserted by miscreants using stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities or SQL Injection.
There have been quite a few instances of this in the past on some fairly large websites. From time to time you find malicious content being served by Web-based Advertising providers, too.

For this reason, noscript is actually quite a handy protection mechanism. A lot of malicious web-based code relies on javascript. By disallowing javascript by default, and only whitelisting sites via noscript that you use regularly and trust, you significantly reduce what many sites can actually do within your browser, which makes it significantly less likely that 'exploit packs' and malicious web-based content will affect you if you're unlucky enough to encounter it.
What noscript can't protect you against an XSS-type attack in which malicious content is embedded on a site you trust and have whitelisted; this is where things like antivirus software and inbuilt browser attack site detection such as this functionality in firefox come in handy.

If you can do it easily, that certainly offers you some extra protection against malware getting into your bank account.
Arguably using a separate physical host would probably be better, as you're more effectively segregating your 'untrusted' and 'trusted' browsers rather than simply relying on malware not being able to break out of a VM and into another.
Having said that, given that most attacks of this sort are aimed at the lowest common denominator, it's probably fairly unlikely that many malware authors have gone to the trouble of trying to bypass this sort of virtual restriction given the small number of users they attack who're likely to apply this sort of configuration.

If you are working on Linux so its best choice but if you want to secure your PC so you should have to do work on Administrator, So you can very nicely secure you PC , Otherwise Anti virus, Firewall software and Physical device and some you can use security software, All of this you can get from the Google.

I agree with 2 antispyware and just 1 antivirus because at times having 2 AV can cause too much conflict and may recognize each other as threats, which happened to me..and I also would agree with the CCleaner part just to make sure that you wont leave traces specially that you do Online banking.
