What SifuMike says is quite true, there is no "best" as such.
It really depends on how a PC is used, but mainly what the attack actually is and whether your security software is ready to handle that attack.
However one rarely know the type of attack in advance.
Better anti-malware solutions these days include heuristics/behavioral detection, bad site lists, cloud based support and more to help with emerging threats.
These emerging threats are the hard ones to detect as even frequently updated software can miss them, especially as they morph.
This is the main reason why I think no one software is the best. BUT some are far better than others.
I always prefer all-in-one solutions as the components are expected to play better with each other. However no harm in having an additional scanner based solution such as MalwareBytes just to do on demand scans.
Also I have found that MSSE, which has a broad signature list, does seem to play well with other anti-malware products, but one should do own research before deciding on that.

I have found AVAST to be a very good program, compared to others, and does not slow down your computer.

Like Groovicus said, you need to qualify what best means. In my opinion, for a home environment, I want a high detection rate, low resource usage & pre-boot scanning for the AV. Don't really care about the other features.
In the corporate world, I want the same features plus good reporting / alerting, remote installation, doesn't break all kinds of other stuff when it installs (sorry Symantec Endpoint, you're out!).
I use Avast at home. Most of my corporate clients use Trend Micro which is good from a manageability perspective but doesn't detect a lot of crap. I like Bit Defender better for Corporate.

You can check virus bulletin for the latest comparative tests.
www.virusbtn.com
Also shadowserver.org has some comparative tests, usually Antivir and Bitdefender score pretty high. The thing is when the AV begin detecting the virus it has already spread to the whole world. Development of effective heuristics are still underway.
