I am looking to make a default image for a series of computers, all of which have the same specs.
They will all be Windows 7 units, I just need a recommendation on what to use to create and deploy the images to the end user PCs.

Add another point for Acronis.
I have used it many times for a few computers and up to 15.
Anything over that, I would look for an enterprise solution.

I've heard good things about Arconis too but haven't used it. I'm a Ghost kinda guy and have used that for the last 8+ years.
I know you said you've got identical machines, but consider something like Universal Imaging Utility for making an image that is hardware independent.

I've been using Paragon Drive Backup for a year or so and quite like it. Its saved my ass more then once. With it I can backup individual files or folders, a partition or entire drive.
I can make an image of my 50gb boot partition in about 20 minutes and restore it in about the same amount of time.

You need some software that will allow you to boot from USB and make some operations. Try Handy Backup Disaster Recovery, it is exactly what you're looking for.

I personally use acronis, the best feature I found with acronis is it's easy to use user interface. Ghost comes in a close second, but is a bit daunting to use for users who aren't very technical.
If you're looking for high configurable sultion then clonezilla is free and is fature packed, however, it's GPL so it means it's not the most user friendly software to use. However for experts clonezilla is amazing, because you can set it up perfectly to suit your needs.

When I was at a previous job, we always used Symantec Ghost32 along with a BartPE boot CD. Worked flawlessly.
