update:-

i no longer need to put imagex onto a bootable CD as i've found you can grab an image using WDS, but the problem i'm now having is that when i roll out that image it always asks for the licence key, how do i run sysprep so the image doesn't ask for the licence key??

You need to create an "answer file" that contains the Product Key. This answer file can then be used to perform an unattended installation or imaging. Note that the format of this answer file has changed over the years depending on operating system.

For Windows XP this can be created by hand or using Setup Manager (Setupmgr.exe).

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Customizing-Unattended-Setup.html

For Vista/7 it can also be created by hand, however the XML nature of the file and sheer complexity lead most to use Windows System Image Manager (SIM), part of the Automated Installation Kit (AIK).

The Automated Installation Kit (get the latest version) contains all of the tools you will need for Vista/7/2008/2008R2 including ImageX, DISM, SIM, and tools to build WindowsPE environment if needed.

Specifically, you will be looking to use SIM to create the answer file for Vista/7/2008/2008R2.

With your answer file in hand (type that matches the OS) you will use the /unattend Sysprep switch during Sysprep.
