The best is notepad/textpad (insert your favourite editor here).

The best WYSIWIG HTML editor is Dreamweaver by a long way, but you still have to know raw HTML to get good results with it as it requires tweaking and pushing sometimes.

So now you have what seems to be the same subject in two differenet posts see how you changed the subject in http://www.security-forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5325&highlight= to "best editors"?

That's called crossposting. Don't do it.

If your on *nix then Kate is pretty damn spanking

If your on windows, anything that has line numbering and syntax highlighting will do, but there not nessestities, good ol'e notepad does the job just fine : )

All the best,

HomeSite is great, I use it all the time. It used to be made by Allaire but then got sold to Macromedia. It shipped free with DreamWeaver 4, was also available independantly, but I'm not sure what the situation is now MX is out. Check the Macromedia website, it'll have the answer.

IMO,

The best raw html editor is HomeSite.

For a WYSIWYG editor..

I use FP 2000 personally,
but Dreamweaver is a lot more versitile & better overall.
I just dont have the spare time right now to switch over to Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver is ok granted, but it is very heavy indeed, i still stick with something lite like Kate (for *nix) or if you dont mind working without line numbers or syntax highlighting then notepad is just fine,
But what _Mhz suggested sounded like a deent alternative

I wouldn't trust any magazine that recommends Microsoft Frontpage. That's enough to stop me buying it ever again.

For a windows environment it has to be textpad. There are so many syntax highlighting downloads, I use it for everything, config files, html, php, batch bash etc etc etc.....
