A previous mandrake box was unstable, crashing etc so decided to reinstall
Started the mandrake install after doing slow format with bad block check(which turned up ok) and replacing the memory
about a quarter of the way through a slackware 8.1 install, here is a summary of the error
Quote: |
Illegal instruction
Invalid operan: 0000
CPU:0
EIP 0010 Not tainted
...
stack ffffff00......
code: ff ff eb d9.....
<0>kernel panic: attempted to kill the idle task
idle task not syncing
|
Any ideas on what this could be
thanks

I don't quite get what you mean? You started a mandrake install and it hung then same on slack? or no mandrak install, just slack?
Either way, I'm not all that clued up about this sort-of thing anyway but I did a bit of a search and came up with a couple of memory related things. One of them was reasonably similar and only occurred with a stick in the second slot - went away with only the first slot filled.
Sorry I can't really help, but every bit counts sometimes.

A quick search on google suggests various causes from duff memory to unrecognized(able) hardware.
If you can post the full error we may be able to find the cause.
Alternatively if you're a braver soul than I, there's the Kernel Mailing list!!

We're trying to install Slackware. The previous OS was mandrake and it was too unstable, so we got rid of it.
Here's the full error.

Yep as MR2 said mandrake was previously up for 150 odd days, then all of a sudden it crashed, then kept dying with random errors so I decided to reinstall but this time using slackware 8.1
Same errors, I thought it was hardware also but have already tried different memory already(always in slot 1 though) just one stick and a slow format

Have you made sure PnP is disabled in the BIOS?
And if the Mandrake was fine for 150 days then keeps crashing and Slack crashes on install something is seriously wrong with the hardware.
Ditch it.

Yep PnP OS is disabled.
It has a 150 days uptime on the working OS, so it can't be a hardware problem surely?

Must be a hardware problem, why would it stay up 150 days then suddenly crash? Then crash on re-install unless something fundemental was wrong.
Answer: It wouldn't

We've tried different memory in it.

By the sounds of it it's something pretty bad, one of the motherboard controllers cos it's crashing when it's probing the hardware I think.
Is the hard drive making any weird noises
It's not an IBM 75gxp is it?
LOL
Not sure exactly what it is...try installing winblowze on it. That'll be more informative as to what is wrong.
If it installs run Sisoft Sandra 2002 Pro on it and find out what's what.

Its not crashing when probing this is after I have mounted partitions its when actually installing files
Via chipset/100 bus speed / 2.4 kernel

While I'm merrily doing a pattern match on the vaious kernel groups and the kml can you boot up in recovery & boot the installed kernel?
If you can see if you can run
Quote: |
#>ksymoops -m /boot/System.map-"your kernel" -d < /var/log/crashlog |
and post the results.
Cheers
