Well there are a lot of variables with the salary and job opportunities. Just to name a few are physical location, experience, what type of position, what kind of company, what kind of benefits.
Generally the starting programmer is 40-50 thousand a year.
Network security varies directly with experience, and what you are running.
Lan admin can start at apx 35-40 thousand a year. and go up from there.
Unix admin I've seen from 40 to 100 thousand a year varying with experience.
Hope this helps.

Halve that to get UK salaries in £. IT salaries start at around £20,000 p/a here and it always surprises me how little some people make. Fewer than 5% of the UK population make more than £35,000 in any event. A good proportion of those will be in IT.

Programming, Admin and Security. But all the "Big bucks" come with experience. I just interviewed for a unix/linux/lan admin position and they are offering up to $40,000 a year. SO it all depends.

As with anything - owning the company. Life has changed over the last few years. When I started we were like high priests who knew arcane rituals and we got paid shedloads because no-one knew any better. Now almost everyone thinks that they are computer literate so money has gone down.

mejoc - no - making money is not gone but we need to make ourselves
differently now. It takes longer - you need to have a true love of the
profession, specialize carefully and stick with it for longer periods.
Business ownership is certainly one way. Self employment and consulting
seems to be where the $$$ are in my area.
Forensics and criminal investigations seem to be
the best specialties right now.
btw - I'm in NY as well.

It isn't really the right question. You should ask yourself "What do I find most interesting?" Then go for that. The people whom I know who are making the best money are really deeply involved in what they do. Cash is not the right criterion.

The I.T. market is no longer the golden ticket it used to be due to saturation by people like you only interested in how much money they can make.
Seriously if you have that attitude, you will never make big bucks.

well it depends guys on the kind of experience you might have, the years of experience and your skills level.....
True IT professionals , are really few..... There are many guys out there who do know something ,but not in a satisfying level and that leads most enterprises to hire one or two more IT people and as a result the sallaries go down in order fot the companies to suffer expenses....
As for me.....well lets say i was arround the day that IBM 286 were the cutting edge of technology and the AS400 made its fist appeareance....
yeah,yeah...i know i am an old man...hehehehe
