My "friend" is asking me to test out his FTP server that he has running. Now it is running anonymous ftp and so I have access to it. ALl files upon arrival to the ftp server become owned by the ftp user that is part of ftp group. The banner on the service doesn't tell anything about what version it is or what OS it is running on. I don't know if it matters or now but the permissons looked linux styled. When I connect I can make folders and upload files. It is sais that the root directory is / but, but there aren't any system folders or anything so it could be a chroot jail or something like that. No other ports are open. Any ideas of how I can gain access to it?

Try the address to see if there is a web server enabled as well.

If there is then use NetCraft to get the OS:

Fingerprint the OS with nmap or xprobe.

Also there some of the FTP servers will tell you what type of system they are running on. You might need to go in via Telnet to see it
