    ----
Hi All,

Been meaning to bring this up for a while now .. has anyone else noticed that when all those pretty snowflakes are dropping on the main sfdc page their cpu is running riot ?? i mean have a look at this ...

load averages: 1.27, 0.68, 0.38 23:21:52
87 processes: 84 sleeping, 2 running, 1 on cpu
CPU states: 9.3% idle, 89.7% user, 1.0% kernel, 0.0% iowait, 0.0% swap
Memory: 512M real, 167M free, 217M swap in use, 650M swap free

PID USERNAME LWP PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND
605 cass 1 30 0 33M 59M run 42:00 65.73% Xorg
1208 cass 3 52 0 67M 37M sleep 0:26 19.87% firefox-bin

as you can see my Xorg server on this AMD64 Solaris 11 system is way too high ,, and incase you think its a Solaris problem i see similar cpu probs when i run it under XP. .. i also spotted some mean performance issues at work last week on a 8 way 32gb Sparc server because my Xsun process was running riot, had me looking all pver the place for a cause i could not find until i noticed Xsun running high, changed the page from sfdc and it went away ....

What type of graphics are these snowflakes and how are they implemented if they cause me this much of a performance hit ...

Cheers

Cass

Works fine for me, but maybe disable javascript? Smile Or use NoScript (since you are using Firefox).

I have noticed the same increased load on my CPU as well. Can we bring out some sun and get rid of the snowflakes? Cool

Ive seen the snow flakes on one of the members personal websites but cant remember whos, been through all the links and cant find it again they must have taken it down. Tought you might have been able to see if it had the same affect.

Yeah disabling javascript stops the snowflakes falling and the cpu runs normal, nice one .. thanks .... though i do second the motion to get rid of them once and for all ......

I hear you man, its a little extra in the stocking for the cpu Wink but seriously for me the performance hit is just too much, i have been living with it since they came out without really registering what the cause was, until last week on a beefy server my cursor was dragging and interactivity in the shell was dire, mabey some analysis is required to try to improve it for next year ... there must be something that can be done ... or are we only a couple who see it? or is it that every one else is happy that 2/3 of cpu time goes to snowflakes ? pretty as they may be. The code that generates them either needs overhauled or the gifs that fall are too big, mabey its a transparancy thing i dunno ... was just a comment of an observation.. its resolved now for me by turning of javascript but not the end solution imho as i dunno what ill need javascript on for !

I do notice the computer become somewhat slower when accessing the main page - this is a P4 2.4GHz w/512 MB RAM, not exactly a P90 Wink

On Win2k with Firefox 1.5 it becomes a bit slow but tolerable. On Gentoo with Firefox 1.0.4 (yeah I know, upgrade time) it's unbearable. Interesting to see a difference there; since it's the same browser I would venture to guess it's a graphics issue, perhaps with the transparencies or something. Then again it's not the same version of the browser, so can't really compare.

The Administrators will hold a discussion on this issue and see if we can't come up with a solution to satisfy all.

For another site displaying falling snowflakes, try here . It is CWNet ISP provider, and this is their first year doing it. (I think they got the idea from us).

Yep the other sites performance is just as bad for me ..... on the other hand though thanks for reviewing this problem here at least, nice one ..... let us know if we can help performance tuning !!

Interestingly, Konqueror (KDE3.5) puts CPU usage up a bit but doesn't noticeably effect performance.

This is on an AMD XP2000 with 512MB RAM. I found this interesting because often Konqueror hogs CPU on Javascript-heavy sites compared to Firefox.

Tom, when I opened that link you mentioned, my CPU hangs between 65-75%, when I close it, stabalizes around 5-10%, 2.0 P4 / 512 / XPsp2, I get the same results here.

Yeh I tried that link Tom posted on FireFox 1.0.7 (Ubuntu) same for me 95% CPU usage Smile

Firefox jumps to around 70% CPU for me.

I don't really see this as an issue - I typically have the actual hompage open for seconds only, then I'm off to check posts since last visit and don't get the snowflakes anymore.

It's just a bit of seasonal fun - but aren't we supposed to take the decorations down on the twelfth day of Christmas for good luck in the year to come?

(I can never remember if it is bad luck for them to come down too early or too late, so I always aim for 6th Jan and hedge my bets!)

Okay I go to 40% CPU on Firefox when a page with snowflakes on is visible.

Not really *that* much of an issue, for the limited time the main page is open anyway, before navigating on to threads...

I don't know if they continue when the page is out of focus (window or tab not active) but if so, stopping them then might help!

Is it me, or did it just get a lot warmer round here? Smile
