I have a micro 2005 server sql cd. Is there a front end tool on the cd? or do i have to purchase that separately?

You should have Enterprise manager that is loaded on your workstation to manage the sql instance.

You can also run a command

osql -E -S (local)

To see if your sql is up and running, if you get a prompt that looks like
1> then you know it is running and you can pass commands to it.
