    ----
I have a friend who has asked me to help fix his mac book. He took it to the mac store and they said it would cost 850 to fix his sleep magnet and there his motherboard. Before he gets his motherboard replaced he wants to see if fixing his inverted magnet would fix the problem. He is hoping the water damage to his motherboard is insignificant. Has anyone had to fix the sleep magnet by chance and have any advice before i tear open his mac book?

The switch that controls the magnet release also tells the logic board when to go to sleep and when to wake up. That is integrated into the logic board. Since there is no moving part, what is wrong with it?
That is a scary quote!:
"He is hoping the water damage to his motherboard is insignificant."
What is actually going wrong with his laptop? Here's hoping for the best!

The computer turns on then goes right to sleep. Then he took it to the MAC store and they said that the sleep magnet was inverted - Now im confused as you just said it isn't a moving part. When looking at his computer they noticed some water damage, but the way he telling me is that there was little water damage and was hoping we could get it working again.

generally speaking, water is ok for circuitry as long as it has a chance to completely dry out. if the machine was running or if he tried to turn it on lots of times before it dried out then he could have caused irreperable damage to the laptop.

also, did you try going to pbfixit.com to see if they have a schematic for this part? that might save you some time if you have to open it up...

I dont have his computer yet, but i am looking at that website. Looks pretty nice.

Thanks,
Peter

Edit:

ok i was able to take the keyboard off the mac. Where exactly would the sleep magnet be, just out of curiosity? Is there anything i could do other then buying a new circuit board?

Thanks
Peter

There are a couple of laptop repair sites that have good instruction manuals:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
http://www.ifixit.com/cart/catalog/
http://iresq.com/portables/
Good luck!
