Hey, can anyone recommend a decent CMS for my website?
I checked out the list of Web CMS on Wikipedia and I am trawling through them but there are so many a recommendation would go a long way.

The only prerequisite is that it must use a MySql backend. The front end can be ASP.net, Perl, Python or PHP.

Thanks,

Fire Ant

Here is a pretty big list of CMS which demos:
http://php.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=1&cat=CMS%20/%20Portals

But I think, that you should tell us why you need CMS. What kind of text will be presented on your site? Do you want a CMS with a lot of plugins, or maybe a simple script, to code plugins yourself? The same problem about themes - some kind of CMS use very simple layouts.

If your choice is OpenSource, you should remember, that everyone has access to the code. It means, that everybody could find the bug. So you should check the support of CMS, check the frequency of publishing security patches, etc.

In my opinion the best kind of CMS are module-based systems
As far as I know, nowadays the most popular are: Drupal, Joomla!, Mambo, PHP-Fusion). But if you wanna page-based, try TYPO3.

Yes I was a bit light on information. Well I was thinking of putting together a website about some of my projects and was thinking of starting a blog etc. I wanted something which I could use of the shelf and had good community support for modules and themes.

I didn't want to spend hours coding my own site, I wanted to really concentrate on the content. I didn't want to have to pay for the product so open source would be great. I have looked at Drupal and XOOPS so far and they are both looking good.

Hands down Wordpress. Wordpress isn't a full fledged CMS, but there are enough plugins and support around the community to basically allow you to do anything a regular CMS would do. I've used Wordpress for several projects and sites and I love it and the community. There are also tons of customizable themes for a unique look. That is what I would suggest.

It's a lot of work, to transform Wordpress into CMS, but I think, that the best way could be the compromise. Use Wordpress as a blog, and put the "real" CMS on your server. It'll be very clear solution.

I use drupal.

Its pretty straight forward, but for users with no experience, a tutorial on how to use the components will be needed. Since they only want to manage text and photos, both of these CMS's handle them pretty easily. Plus, there is a lot of support on how to use a lot of the components and its easy to setup.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your responses. I investigated the CMS suggested (Joomla Drupal) and I eventually picked one (WordPress) and its working great. Hardest part was getting a template I liked.

Cheers,
