Hi,

We have two offices. Let say Office A and Office B.

Office A is connected with Office B through VPN. So users from Office A can ping private IPs of Office B.

We have DNS Server running at Office A and Office B.

Now the problem is that users of Office A cannot ping hosts of Office B through the computer name.

Can anyone tell me what changes we need to make in the DNS of Office A, so that users from Office A are then able to ping host names of Office B with computer names instead of IP addresses.

Many thanks for any help!

If you have 2 DNS server they need to exchange information, so you need to setup zone transfers between the 2 servers.

You should also place both DNS servers on the network configuration that your DHCP is serving the clients.

Office A
DNS Server A
DNS Server B

Office B
DNS Server B
DNS Server A

This should be pretty resilient, even if a DNS server dies both offices will have a full operational DNS server to use.

Thanks for the reply.

Could you please point me to any good article where it is explained, means how to setup zone transfer in windows 2000.

Second, do we need to setup zone transfer on both the servers or it will work if we setup on Office A DNS Server?

Thanks!

Both servers should have zone transfers configured.

DNS Server A - primary server for DNS zone A, secondary for zone B
DNS Server B - primary server for DNS zone B, secondary for zone A

DNS order supplied by DHCP for clients at Office A
DNS Server A
DNS Server B

DNS order supplied by DHCP for clients at Office B
DNS Server B
DNS Server A

There should be a tab to configure DNS zone transfers:
http://www.techrepublic.com/article/manage-dns-zone-transfer-settings-in-windows-2000-server/5844132

Some more, but it's for windows 2003:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781340%28WS.10%29.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782181%28WS.10%29.aspx

Couldn't find the same technet docs for windows 2000.
