Hi guys and gals,

In an effort to give back to the security community at large, SFDC would like to offer you the opportunity to write a column for the site. This column would be anything related to the state of computer security, and would give you considerable leeway in picking a topic. Your column would be between 700 to a 1,000 words. Once completed it would be sent to me for editing, and posting to the site. Should any of you be interested in this great opportunity to get yourself published, on a high profile site then please pm me. Also please post your thoughts on this idea in this thread.

Cheers,

Don

I was actually thinking of writing something over the summer; it'd be a longer piece, perhaps more suited to a series, covering "where to go next" with programming languages.

The idea is that there are countless millions of books and tutorials that will teach you a core language, but then they leave you to work out how to actually use it on your own. For example, you can learn C, but still end up with programs that do nothing but ask for input on the console, and respond with console output. I'd want to build on this with sockets programming, IPC (Inter-Process Communications), Process Control, Threading, System calls (exec() for example) and other related topics, perhaps in C and C++, possibly other languages also.

This isn't something I'd want to do right now, since I still have more exams coming up, but it is something I plan on writing over the Summer. If anyone has any comments, suggestions etc. I'd be more than happy to listen to them and to further explain my idea.

If you write the paper and donate it, SFDC would not have exclusive rights unless you sign something saying otherwise. At least that is my understanding of how it works, hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Sounds interesting.
How longer the column will be available to the readers or how many articles will be posted in a period of time. It is a scheduler or so?

Hi guys,

Please let me clarify a few points. You as the author will retain rights to your paper, as it is only published here. Secondly if you wish to go beyond 1,000 words please let me know as it will have to be broken up into several parts. Lastly also please realize that it will be edited by me, but it will be minimal at best as I wish to preserve your papers contents. I am also a professional writer so don't feel bad being edited by me Very Happy The floor is open to you guys the members on this. It is a wonderful oppotunity to get exposure so please feel free to send me your idea's so that we can move your article/column forward. There is no limit to the amount that you can write it would just get scheduled to go up at periodic intervals.

Hi guys,

There is no deadline for this actually. As long as there is interest in this venture we will keep it going. I look forward to your submissions.

As many others have said this does sound like an excellent idea. I do have a few ideas floating around at the moment, but I have my finals coming up. This means that I would not be able to do anything for the next two months or so. However, after this time I would like to contribute something.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin,

No rush, once your finals are done, feel free to send me your idea/s. The same goes for anyone else; if you have an idea feel free to send it to me via a pm, and we can discuss it.

Hey guys,

Well I have a fair amount of interest so far, but little in the way of actual proposals......As mentioned earlier please send me your idea's so that we can start developing them, and get you published.

Cheers,

Don
