Hi,
Yesterday I freshly installed a XP box, installed SP2 and patched it with all I got previously from MS site ( as of March something ) . Installed Sygate Pro Trail. Turned on Automatic Updates.
Took it online to introduce the browser to my favourite sites. Within 1 hr, Automatic Update "experienced a problem", BAM, screen blanked out, box rebooted, and my account is denied access to this machine. Nice one huh?
This box has been attacked 4 times within the last month and half, same end result - account denied access to this computer as if it were some roaming profile. Only this time, I was there to see how it happened. ( 20/20 hindsight - the event logs would say if something crashed right ?) The last 2 versions have seen improvements - it reboots even if I manage to log back into the account. If those EFS certs werent saved beforehand, the data would have gone bye bye.
OK. I know svchost is the doorman. Does it do any authenticatication of what it receives before passing it on and letting winupdate process it? authentication, encryption, ipsec, blah blah security blah blah?
Someone should report this in Its gonna spread fear and destruction. etc etc.
There - my first so called contribution posting. No proof, no evidence, except what my eyeballs recorded
