First of all I am a total newbie concerning Networking but after reading
various posts and items on the Microsoft Knowledge base I decided to try
and Netrwork 2 of my PCs via Belkin Crossover cable 5e.
This is what I did:
Both PCs with NICs installed and connected by Belkin Crossover Cable 5e
HOST is named FSMASTER and forms part of workgroup WORKGROUP -
This was done under System Properties\Computer Name - The Domain
entry left empty.
CLIENT is named FSSLAVE and forms part of workgroup WORKGROUP -
This was done under System Properties\Computer Name - The Domain
entry left empty.
Client for Microsoft Netrworks not installed on either PC for these NICs
The host and client NICs are only using TCP/IP protocol and under
properties have been assigned IP 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
respectively and with a common Subnet 255.255.255.0 - The DNS entries
in the properties remain blank. I have not touched any other NIC settings.
Both PCs show the NICs installed with no errors at 100 Mbps.
I then installed ICS using Microsoft's instructions published in their Common knowledge base and this seems to be working well on both PCs.
The problem is that whenever I try to map a Network Drive I get an error
telling me Network path cannot be found and if I ping either PC from the
DOS prompt it tells me ping is an unrecognised command. I'm sure I
must have done something wrong here. Any advice or links greatly appreciated and apologies if this has been asked before.
'Ping' is an unrecognised command? That's strange - are you sure you're entering it correctly? If you're on the Master computer, and trying to ping the Slave computer, it should look like this:
Code:
ping 192.168.0.2
As for being unable to map a network drive - do your computers appear in 'My Network Places'? If not, one possibility is because you are using a firewall. I had this problem a while ago when setting up a friend of mine's home network. I had configured everything, but couldn't get access from one computer to another computer's shared folders. It turned out it was a configuration in Norton's firewall.
Will check those things you mentioned although I did at the DOS prompt
(c:\) ping 192.168.0.2 from the Host and the response was not a recognised
command.
