i have had the same problem, sort of, i cant seem to be able to boot to linux directly, is it because i need to configure lilo again so that it knows it is a dual boot system?

no it's not. If LILO doesn't boot it what does it say or where does it hang?

lilo has to be on the primary HD in the MBR

Get an external modem then you will have all the drivers for this in your Linux software.

it's easier to have the dual boot setup is if lilo is in the mbr

LILO can't boot an OS, and the OSs bootloader is in the MBR, so you can boot off floppy. And MANY other reasons....

the setup i have on my linux box is: win2k pro and redhat 8.0, i installed lilo on the primary drive in the mbr and everything works perfectly

.... OK! .... Now boot OBSD/FBSD/QNX/NBSD/BeOS/etc. OSs with LILO, YOU CANT!
