Starting in step-by-step mode might help you to prevent it running at startup. If you can avoid it running you will have a better chance to remove it, I would expect.

I assume from your question that this PC is no longer part of the network where it was installed, so you can't use the central management tools to remove or configure it?

I've seen other such products which can be uninstalled in Safe Mode without prompting for a password. Try that first. If it doesn't work, I found the following:

i know that i am little late for responding on this one...but...anyway.

Symantec, has a unique way of meesing up your system.

You will need to go on manually on the registry to remove it.

First of all.

Go to start>run>msconfig and remove all startup entries regarding Symantec.
DO NOT REBOOT.

Go to start>run>services.msc and at the specific Symantec and Norton services, use the disable mode.
Make sure you have disabled them all and make sure also that no other program is deppending on the Live update module. If there is , then leave only this one on enable mode.

Reboot in safe mode.

try to uninstall. If it is still asking for a passwd, then go manually again.

Erase manually all program folders associated with Symantec and Norton , except of Liveupdate , just to be on the safe side here. Go now to Control panel>system32 and search for all files named at the pattern of "nav*32*" and erase them also.

!!!!!notice!!!!

Do not shift+del them.. keep them in your bin , just in case something goes wrong.

Now go to start>run>regedit and at the Trees of Hkey_local_machine & HKEY_CURRENT_USER , under the Hive SOFTWARE , search for any keys named after Symantec or Norton and just erase them.

!!!!notice!!!!

Take a full backup configuration of your registry before going into this.

Now reboot in normal mode.

Hopefully enough all associations and services will disappear and you will be ready for a new installation of a different AV.

Good luck and if you see this answer , let me know how it went.
