Here is my goal:

I have a site www.abc.com, I'm hosting it from my LAN. When people type in www.abc.com, I want it to resolve to my IP address. My registar gives me the options of either using their nameservers or using my own, also, they do do the usual URL forwarding and stuff, but I don't my IP address to be in the address bar so I want to set up my own name server. How would I go about doing that?

I have the same setup. Just use their nameservers and point www.abc.com to the ip address of your webserver.

There have been threads on here saying the mix up between internal and external domains, if they are both given the same name.

Here I am using abc.com as my internal domain, and one of the machines on my LAN serves www.abc.com, and is accesible inside and outside the LAN. So Im not quite sure what everyone elses problems are LoL.

There is no need to setup your own nameserver if there are tons around anyway!

OK. I think im missing something here.

My www record is held with 123-reg.com managed by their nameservers.

If I type www.mydomain.com into my browser....

I see no ip address? Only way to see it is if you do a whois.

I can't edit my nameserver records with my registar, my only option is to have them forward the URL or use my own nameserver

Do you have a static ip, If so just use your registerars DNS.

Ah I see.

Well 123-reg can transfer the domain to them.

They are really good and have full DNS management online.

Is this an option you could take?

Yeh but they offer a shite service.

Pay off the contract as you would do with a mobile phone?

Sorry I am going off the point but building your own nameserver is a bit drastic.

Well if your hosting abc.com anyway, you will have an local DNS (I gather you are using Active Directory?).

Will be in start programs, administrative tools on the server, or if you have installed adminpak.msi on the workstations.
