Hi,
I wonder if you guys can help?
A friend has a problem that has me stumped. They have a BT broadband ADSL connection. Some websites, (play.com, tesco.com, argos.co.uk to name but a few) are very slow to load on her machine. I have run Adaware and Spybot 1.4 and found some spyware and removed it but still the same problem. I tried to download Mozilla Firefox but www.mozilla.com seemed to suffer the same fate. eventually mozilla .com loaded and I downloaded Firefox. I installed Firefox and tried the websites but they were still slow to load. Tried disabling firewall and web vulnerabilities in McAfee Internet security but still the same problem. I deleted cookies and Temporary internet files. Still same problem. In desperation I took a HJT log and I am hoping someone can give it the once over and tell me if there is any malware that is causing this behaviour. Oh yes nearly forgot, downloaded IE 7 as it had disappeared from the program list. IE 7 downloaded and went through the motionsd of installing but it still does not appear in the program list. Also broadband appears to be steady as a rock and some websites (bbc.co.uk, theregister.co.uk, channel4.com), download as fast as you would expect.

Hello there,
I don't see any real malware in this log. There are some entries that need to be fixed, so we'll do that first. There are several resource hogs running, and we'll fix those after we know for sure the system is clean. 
Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido)
- Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
- After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
- Click the settings tab, then click "apply all actions" and choose clean (quarantine)
- Close AVG. Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".
- In Safe Mode, load AVG Anti-Spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
- AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
- Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
- Restart back into Normal Mode.
In your reply, please post the report from AVG and a new HijackThis log. Please also let me know how your computer is running.

I've just returned from Duncombe house after spending 3.5 hrs downloading, installing, updating and running AVG spyware. Some real unusual stuff going on there. Took ages for the free.grisoft pages to reveal themselves, 6MB was downloaded in approx 10 seconds then it took about 1.5 hrs to download the updates. I tried turning off the Windows Firewall, The Mcafee firewall (Yes they had them both turned on!). Tried disabling other bits from the McAfee suite, changed the ethernet cable between computer and router. Anyway the upshot of it all is that it is still taking forever for webpages to come up. One thing that does show everytime Windows starts is an alert window. It says:
SmartBridge Alerts: BT HelpNotifier.exe
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic Link library PSAPI.DLL
Don't know if that has any bearing on this but I may take it up with BT tech support next time I am there. Anyway when run in safe mode AVG found 13 tracking cookies.

Well, still no malware, and AVG was really good. We can go through these and see if it helps, otherwise I agree that your best bet will be with BT support.
The following are not malware, but fixing them with HijackThis will improve your system's speed. None are necessary at startup, and may be started manually at any time. This is up to you.

Hi Teacup,
This is just a follow up now that we have a resolution to this problem. Firstly it took me ages to get a time when I was free and Lesley was also free. However I did get round last week and Lesley and I were surprised to find that all websites were downloading at a reasonable broadband speed. She said that a couple of days before I called round they had called BT on a sub account issue (Her teenage son has a sub account off of her main account). Apparently his account was 'reset' by the BT personnel. Whether this has sorted her problems I can only guess at.
So, all's well that ends well.
How much do I owe you for your assistance?
