I am attempting to disable AutoPlay in XP Pro by following your suggested advice, below, but am unable to "see" the System submenu under Administrative Templates. (I have already set my View Folder Options to include displaying the contents of system folders)

************************************************************
It is safest to disable CD autoplay in XP using either local group policy or, for an enterprise, an Active Directory group policy. The local group policy editor method:
* Click Start
* Click Run
* Enter GPEDIT.MSC
Group Policy mmc will popup. On left panel:
* Double-click Computer Configuration to open submenu
* Double-click Administrative Templates to open submenu
* Double-click System to open submenu
* Double-click Turn autoplay off option which will be near the bottom of the list in the right panel.

The default is the Not configured . Set it to Enabled.
************************************************************

Do you know why I am unable to see the Systems submenus? Rolling Eyes

You can disable autorun in the registry.

Thanks for your help, Breda, but unfortunately (and typically) MS's suggested disabling of autorun in the registry. by way of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953252 doesn't work in my case.

Perhaps it is because I opted to downgrade my OS on my machine from Vista OS to what I prefer - XP Pro.

In any case, no matter what I do, I am unable to "see" the System submenu under Administrative Templates, and therefore cannot expand Administrative Templates, click System, and in the settings pane, right-click Turn off Autoplay, and click Properties.

MS's Instructions are:
************************************************
(for) Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000

1. Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then click System.
3. In the Settings pane, right-click Turn off Autoplay, and then click Properties.
4. Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
5. Click OK to close the Turn off Autoplay Properties dialog box.
6. Restart the computer.

How to selectively disable specific Autorun features
To selectively disable specific Autorun features, you must modify the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value under the following registry key subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\

Quick question,

Would there be a need to disable Autoplay for USB and all if no one will ever have physical access to your system. Say for a home PC?

I know if one can detect a USB autoplay then a virus could be automatically loaded but can that be done remotely?

There is also a cool utility for xp called tweakxp which has a nice interface for disabling such things as autostart. Love tweakxp myself and use it all the time, particularly with new instalations to get everything the way i like it Wink
