We have a Windows 2003 Stanadard Edition SP2 as our DOmain Controller.

We are in the process of migrating to Windows 2008.

we are planning the roll out

1. Install the Windows 2008 server to be part of the domain.

2. DCPROMO the new server

2. transfer all the roles from windows 2003 to windows 2008

3. demote windows 2003 DC

4. decommision the windows 2003 server

Will this complete the migration?

What do we need to follow up as best practises to ensure a smooth migration?

Now,

1. Will this move all my AD objects?

2. will this move my DHCP settings?

3. we have certain errors on the current DC, will these also be moved on to the new DC?

Please advise.

Regards

Philip

Without knowing the full details of your environment and going on the fact that you only have one DC at the moment so it is pretty small then I'd say that was spot on.

The only thing you will want to consider over what you've mentioned are the other network services such as DNS and DHCP. DNS will migrate if you are running AD integrated and DHCP can be migrated pretty easily using only a few commands (plenty of articles on migrating DHCP from / to a DC).

Looks like you've got a good plan so good luck. Smile

Thanks for the encouraging & positive response. However I have 2 more questions to ask, maybe more, but 2 for now

1. How do I transfer the DNS settings?

2. I have many errors showing up on the log files, will these errors be transferred to the new DC?

If you've got your 2003 server running DNS in "Active Directory Integrated" then all you need to do is the same on the 2008 server. AD will then take care of migrating the contents of you DNS zone(s).

sorry to say this but it depends on what they are. Smile if they're to do with the 2003 server having disk issues or something local for example then no they won't.

Your best option would be to clean up the 2003 server as best as possible by resolving as many of the errors as possible before adding the 2008 server in. A clean and healthy AD is a lot easier to migrate and less prone to things going wrong.
