Does anyone know of any good resources providing an introduction to ColdFusion MX? I've had a look on Google and the best I've found so far is this one>> http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/programming/coldfusion/tutorials/tutorial2.html

Anyone know of anything better. I'm starting from the gorund up on this one. My databse skills revolve around creating everything from scrath in Java and XML but this isn't an option at the moment since work dictates that I use CF, SQL and a MS database (probably going to be Access).

Thanks in advance

Uncle Tom

EDIT: Changed title a bit, read that tutorial I mentioned above and need something more advanced!

To really get to grips with CF, i would recommend purchasing some of the macromedia endorsed books on the subject, have a look at Ben Forta's site, www.forta.com he does some technical writing for Macromedia.

If your company is that keen for you to use CF, i would recommend you ask them to purchase the books for you.

Try here for good prices: http://www.compman.co.uk/cgi-win/search.exe?searchterms=coldfusion&searchtype=all

If you really want power however, might i suggest trying PHP an MySQL/Postgresql. This also has the advantage of being "free" software (mysql might not 100% be in that category), as a Coldfusion MX license stands at about £1000 atm. PHP & mysql can also run in a windows environment if that is a concern.

The reason i suggest all this, is if you a starting a project from afresh, it is better to get the platform right in the beginning. Having built an online shopping cart in Coldfusion & MS Access (www.harmonymedical.co.uk) myself, we are now faced with the fact that this software combination is far too restrictive for our needs, and converting everything from Access to MySQL is a pain. - The SQL queries are slightly different, so its not just a case of moving data, a lot of the interface needs to be re-written as well. (meaning it takes time and money to do, something *hopefully* your company would want to avoid).

I am not saying dont use Coldfusion, but i am suggesting that you/your company are 100% sure they will not want something more that CF cannot provide later on. - PHP is much more expandable in this respect, whereas CF is rather limited.

some URLs I've used in the past when learning .cfm...

http://www.cfdev.com
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/coldfusion
http://www.cfzone.net
http://www.maxfusion.co.uk
http://www-tcsn.experts-exchange.com/Web/WebDevSoftware/ColdFusion

If you search google there are thousands of them out there with plenty of great information for all levels of Coldfusion Devs.

Good Luck

Thanks for the responses fellaz.

If I had much say in it we would do everything through JSP and XML (my personal favourites) but I work at a acollege and the course that the CF servers are goign to be used on has already been written and it's far too late to change it all. From what I now know about CF it looks like it'll be up to what they want to do. The people who running the course (I'm a technician) are database people, not programmers so I've just got to make do with what they pay me to do Rolling Eyes

Ah well, such is life, and thanks for the links
